My new blog home will be over at jCreate.

How come, you ask?

For the past few months I have found it increasingly difficult to manage two blogs. One for Not 2 Shabbey and one for jCreate Magazine. I've wanted to somehow merge the two so that it would be one interface and so it's finally happening. Welcome to jCreate with Not 2 Shabbey.

What is jCreate??

jCreate is an organization that I founded a year ago. It's all about inspiring moms, teachers, kids, and teens to be more creative.... with a Jewish twist. For so long I have felt that there was great lacking in the Jewish craft world. Yes, there are many blogs out there that focus on crafting and of course Pinterest is full of amazing craft projects, but I felt that the Jewish craft offerings were very limited. Before I started blogging and painting, I was a teacher, inspiring my students with creative lessons plans - engaging them kinestetically, through movement and art activities that would foster not only creative thinking skills, but overall retention for the subjects I was teaching. I wanted to start sharing my lessons plans, crafts, and ideas with my fans inspiring them to be more creative in their homes and classrooms. Let's keep children busy with wholesome activities. In the past year jCreate Magazine has spread Jewish creativity with so many crafting projects, tablescapes, recipes, and awesome trends that center around the Jewish calendar. We engaged with over 300,000 moms, teachers, and children throughout 50+ countries.

Who's behind jCreate?

There are just some things that are too big for one gal to do on her own. Baruch Hashem (Thanks G-d) I have been surrounded by supportive and amazing people. 2 of those women have joined me in this new jCreate journey.

Mirel Goldwasser (Creative Director) - Mirel's company Oomph creative successfully helps brands, both big and small, with creative marketing solutions and a full line of graphic design services on a budget. Her tireless efforts have made jCreate a reality -- with artistic flair and a bit of snark!

Estee Lavitt (Managing Editor) - Estee manages and edits jCreate because she is passionate about spreading Jewish creative content with professionalism. As a mom, she tries to stay on top of simple craft trends with a Jewish twist to educate and entertain her young children. Estee makes things happen by being attached to her Android, iPad and other ping-ing, tweeting devices.

When I am not working on pieces you can often find me on the phone with one of these amazing ladies, or on a video google hangout laughing away at something Mirel did to make Estee and I laugh!

What about Not 2 Shabbey?

Nothing has changed! Not 2 Shabbey is the brand name in which I sell all my pieces and work. You can still buy my pieces at www.not2shabbey.com or at local retailer near you. jCreate with Not 2 Shabbey is just the new home for all my crafts, tutorials, and videos. I hope it will be a community for others like me who will want to share their ideas and projects with other creative minds. I will absolutely be accepting submissions and hope that you will like the jCreate facebook page and follow the Pinterest board.

I have so many more things brewing and there are exciting things happening over here at the Not 2 Shabbey headquarters (AKA my basement studio) I can't wait to share with you my upcoming journey. Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss out on all the news to come :)

Catch you at my new home - the jCreate blog!

Till next time!

I am so loving these glitter tattoos for Purim!
They are so fun and easy. My kids totally enjoyed tattooing each other! Even the little 2 year old needed a turn!

These glitter tattoos are made by Tulip and can be found at your local craft store or online.

The packs come in 6 different glitter colors, 2 brushes, glue gloss, and a variety of sicker designs.

All you have to do is place the sticker on your skin, spread on some glue, pour on the glitter, and brush it off. When you pull off the sticker you will have a perfect design!

I was amazed at how clean the lines are when you take the sticker off. The tattoos look so professional and not messy. The best part?? You can reuse these stickers over and over again.

I am thinking of bringing one of these boxes to my sisters house this Purim. My nieces and nephews will get such a kick out of these. I'm thinking they would be great at a Purim Carnival too!!

Till next time!
3 Years ago for Purim my kids dressed up in cowboy costumes and my little baby was the cow. It was the only year I had professional shot taken of my kids! For our Mishloach Manot we gave out Southwest salad that was packed and wrapped in a western cowboy hat. I made the tag on my computer and attached it to a plastic sheriffs badge that I got at Oriental Trading CO.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2645672705187071060.post-33314086749273248372014-01-28T12:23:00.001-08:002014-01-29T12:43:13.366-08:00The CHA Winter Mega Show 2014

Normally CHA has 2 trade shows throughout the year, one in the summer and one in the winter. They have now decided to combine both shows into one big MEGA show. There were so many booths, workshops, demos, and networking opportunities. It's so hard to describe everything I saw and took apart in, but I will try my hardest to provide you guys with a complete recap.

This year, I was invited to become part of the designer section of CHA. Although I have been part of the organization for 3 years now as a professional crafter, becoming part of the designer section is like becoming part of a family. Not only is everyone so welcoming, but it's wonderful meeting like minded people, other individuals that totally get my artsyness and crazy brain :) I was only able to go to a couple of those classes because I had to run home for Shabbat. I made it back to the valley in time to hit up some vintage clothing stores and pick up a good read!

Some of the best craft companies come out to network and meet a roomful of craft bloggers. I was so amazed by the energy and excitement in the room. And the SWAG... OMG the SWAG!! I have been to parties before, but this was like nothing I had seen before. I had to carry out 4 bags of craft supplies! Thanks to Lisa Fulmer I can show you guys this great video of what we each got!

I saw some of the most creative work from designers in various craft booths. From stamps, ceramics, paint, beads, clay, and glassware to arm knitting and fashion shows, it was beyond beyond incredible. Every booth has a make & take area where you can sit down and create hands on with their materials. Check out this flipgram I created with ALL my photos from the event.

I was lucky enough to see the Today show tape a segment about the crafting industry over by the Duck mobile. Check out their video here. If you want to know what CHA is all about .... you better watch it!!!
A BIG BIG shout out to my new followers. I've noticed a bunch of new readers and Facebook fans recently so WELCOME to my little world of CRAZY!!

I was a bit MIA in the beginning of December and I'm now just slowly getting back to every day life. Unfortunately, my sister is very sick. She is currently in ICU, stable but very critical. I am splitting my time between the hospital, working, and being a mommy to my 5 little children. I thought that I knew what it meant to multi task, but these past few weeks have been insane. Please continue to have my sisters name in your thoughts and prayers. Her Hebrew name is Etta Malka Chaya bas Devorah Gruna. There is a mystical belief that when at least 40 women bake challah with a sick person in mind, there is a segulah (merit) for the hope that Hashem (God) will hear their prayers and help. I have started a chllah campaign to help gather and organize those who would like to bake Chakkah in honor of my sister Etta Chinskey. You can sign up here http://www.tziporahsnest.com/campaign.asp?id=200 I feel so lucky to have the special followers that I do. Your outpouring support and sweet words are beyond special to me.
They just came out with
Parsha Packs. You know how your kids come home with tons of papers and newletters every Friday? My Shabbos table is always littered with them! Well these bags easily attach to your chair. You can place it on the back, the arm, or if you want it to be out of sight stick it under the chair so no one can see it! My son loves his and was so excited to use it last week!! Seriously, I think this product is ingenious and super practical. All my kids projects and papers stay safe and organized from week to week.

There are a few ways to order these Parsha Packs. You can order them with names or without - hand painted or embroidered. You can choose from a variety of boys or girls designs or let me design a custom one for you with your childs favorite character, sports team, or superhero!!

Due to the large demand for my pieces I have had to make MAJOR changes to Not 2 Shabbey. For the past couple of months I have been thinking about it, but this #Hanukkah season solidified my plans.

If you've been following my company from the beginning then you know that Not 2 Shabbey is a small business that grew out of my love to provide customers with not only good quality hand painted glassware and ceramic, but PERSONALIZED and CUSTOM tailored to fit their needs. There is nothing better for me then to see the smile on my clients face or to read a special email/letter written by a satisfied happy customer.

Although most of my business is spent designing custom gift items, I also create non-personalized generic tabletop and serve-ware pieces that can be found in various high end tabletop boutiques.

Beginning JANUARY 2014 customers will only be able to purchase personalized products on my website. Any piece that I sell to stores will no longer be available to be purchased through me. These items include salad bowls , cake plates, shot glasses, trifle bowls, and pitchers. Customers will have to buy them through one of my retail locations that will be provided on the website.

I completely understand that without your continued support my company wouldn't be where it is today. So as a thank you to you all, I am having a BIG NEW YEARS BLOWOUT SALE starting tomorrow night though Wednesday.

Enjoy FREE SHIPPING within the US and 30% OFF your entire order.
Yes... it includes yarmulkes :)

Just use code NYRS2014 at www.not2shabbey.com

I hope you will bare with me while these changes are made. I should have the new and improved website up beginning the second week in January. In addition to these changes I have also hired some amazing people to help get pieces out to you sooner. I have a new assistant and shipping girl.

I am currently looking for.....
(1) INTERNS who are Design or Art majors in college.
(2) Retail locations throughout the U.S. where Not 2 Shabbey pieces should be sold.

So if you know of a store in your area where you'd like my pieces to be sold or if you know of someone who might like to intern in a really fun and creative environment please email me at shabbey2@gmail.com

HAPPY SHOPPING!
He's getting married in January!
MAZEL TOV!
Now it's time to get my big tush into a gorgeous gown.

Last spring I did Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 Workout and I found it not only challenging, but effective. I lost 10 pounds between Passover and Shavuot so I knew that I wanted to use Jillian again. A friend of mine told me about Body Revolution a 90 day extreme fitness program. So I decided to look into it.

THE PROGRAM:
You get (15) DVD'S, a 90 day journal, 30 day online membership, 7 day Kick Start Diet, a Meal Plan, and fitness guide. If you order through the website you will also receive the resistance bands for the work outs, but additionally you will need a set of dumbbells (3,5,and 8 pounds) and a mat. The program costs $70 or $100 if you want the deluxe version (comes with 2 extra DVD's and a level 2 resistant band). Both plans can be divided up into 4 payments.

THE MEAL PLAN:
The program starts off with a 7 day Kick Start meal plan. I decided that I could definitely use a kick in my tush and chose to really stick to the plan. Jillian gives you the exact foods she wants you to eat for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner adhering to a 1200 calorie diet. This is the same calorie amount during the rest of the program the only difference is that in the first week you are basically only eating proteins and vegetables; you're not allowed to eat carbs or fruit. The entire program is broken up into a 250 calorie breakfast, 400 calorie lunch, 150 calorie snack, and 400 calorie dinner. She divides all of her meal ideas into 90 days and the best part is that she includes all the recipes to prepare the meals. So it's really a no brainer.

THE FITNESS GUIDE:
The Body Revolution 90 day program is divided into 3 phases with 5 workout DVD's for each phase. Included are 4 strength training workouts and one cardio workout. All of the workouts are just 30 minutes long. You are meant to complete one workout for 6 days, but during the 7 day Kick Start week you are told to do 2 workouts per day; one in the morning and one in the evening. The workouts of course get progressively more intense, but since they are used on a rotation basis it allows your muscles to recover before attempting those exercises again.

I knew going into the program that I would have to tweek a few things.

#1 I'm kosher and adhere to a strict kosher diet, so some of the foods that Jillian wants to you to eat, I can't.

#2 I'm allergic to milk and eggs, so that takes out a lot of the meal choices too.

#3 Almost 7 years ago I fell and shattered my left ankle. The only way the docs could fix me was to install a metal plate on the left hand side of my leg and pins on the right side of my ankle. I tend to stay with more low impact activities, although I am getting stronger and can do jumping jacks and kick-outs.

Yah, it pretty much sucks :(

HOW DID I DO??
I was supremely excited to get started. The first couple days were not an issue, but the 3rd day was very challenging. I was totally having withdrawal and I was out all day long doing deliveries and meeting with clients. I ended up getting a salad from a restaurant only to find that it was totally wilted and inedible, but I didn't have time to get something else, so I ended up just stomaching it.

And that's the day I wrote this on my Facebook page.

I was beyond ecstatic for Shabbos. I wanted to have at least one 24 hour period where I could eat challah and matzah ball soup and not feel bad. I of course planned to stay within my calorie threshold, but instead of 1200 calories I upped it to 1500 which I think is beyond reasonable for us God fearing Shabbos eating gals.

I never cook big meals on Shabbos unless we are having guests. My husband grew up eating the chicken from the soup and when I used to make a main course it would not be eaten. As long as there is grape juice, challah, gefilte fish, matzah ball soup, and chulent he is a happy man - and don't we love to make our men happy???

My family and I have fallen into a routine of eating very yummy delicious small meals with a variety of salads that really fill us up. Thank God these dishes fall into my diet calorie plan!

Friday Night Menu
Homemade Whole Wheat Challah
Israeli Salad
Roasted Beat Salad
Gefilte Fish
Matzah Ball Soup (Made with a whole chicken that we will eat along with all the veggies in the soup)

Shabbos Lunch
Whole Wheat Challah
Chumus
Guacamole
Salsa
Garden Spinach Salad
Gefilte Fish
Chulent

The whole wheat challah came out beyond delicious. You can find the recipe here. I used all whole wheat flour and instead of white sugar I used honey. I also used 3 cups of hot water and 3 cups of seltzer which makes it extra fluffy. The calorie count is roughly 112 calories per slice.

THE RESULTS:
Drum roll please........
After the first week I lost 5 pounds and 10 inches all around my entire body. I honestly feel like my belly is flatter and I definetly have much more energy.

I can't wait to finish week 2 and tell you guys all about it!

Till next time!

If you've been following me lately then you know that I am busy organizing my family. Last week I redesigned our snack and lunch situation in the house. Now it's time for chores.

I ask my kids to help around the house all the time. They do most of the time, but we've never really put together a chore chart where they are responsible for specific tasks or domains within the home.

Teaching children at a young age to help around the house is the key to develop good habits in older kids. Not only does it develop responsibility, but it can foster self esteem as they start to take pride in their work and become masters in their jobs.

I knew I needed a chart for each of my children. I did not want to have one big chart for the family, but something for each of my 5 children - yes, even the almost 2 year old.

Here's what I was looking for in a chore chart system....
- I wanted them to be responsible for a specific room in the house (ie: bathroom, playroom)
- They had to be responsible for a daily chore (ie: garbage, laundry)
- I wanted there to be a separate spot for Shabbos.
- I wanted to incorporate the morning prep and afternoon rules (ie: get dressed, brush teeth)

I went perusing all over the internet for instant downloadable chore charts, but there wasn't anything out there that would cater to my families needs.

I ended up going to my favorite of all places ETSY. If you are unfamiliar with ETSY, it's a site that acts as a store front for artists and crafters to sell their original work to customers. I too have an ETSY store :)

I ended up finding The CreativiDee Workshop. She had exactly the look I was going for. The best thing was that I could print these charts directly from my own computer instantly!
Here's my original email query to Denise...

Hi!
Can do this custom order for me? I know this may seem like a strange request, but I think it will look great and will totally serve the purpose I need it for. I would need (5) 2 girl and 3 boys custom charts. I want it to look like your Daily School Routine, but I want to use it for chores for my kids.

Where it says Morning Checklist- I want it to say "Daily Chores"
Each box should have the letter of the week on top - M,T,W,TH,F
Where it says Daily Reminders - I want it to say "House Zones"
Each box should have the letter of the week on top - M,T,W,TH,F
Saturday - Should say "Shabbos"
Sunday - Should say "Behavior"

I would also like the boxes to be blank so I can put in my own chores for each of the children. Is it possible to create squares of images of chores that I can attach to fit into each square with velcro?

Within 48 hours I had my new chore charts for the kids. What I received from Denise was absolutely perfect!!

I was so excited. I instantly downloaded the charts and printed them out on hard cardstock. I then took the pages to Staples and within 3 hours I had them back laminated. I put velcro on chart as well as behind each of the chore cards.

The last thing I needed was a reward system for my kids. I do not believe in paying children to do chores around the house. We pay a house keeper to clean the house, my children clean their home because they live in it and are responsible for it's maintenance, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't earn a reward for helping nicely and doing a good job.

So I asked Denise to create a punch card to match the set of chore cards she made for me. There are 10 punches on the card and when they are finished with the card they get to pick a prize from our list of Chore Rewards.

I put together a list of some age appropriate chore rewards. I'm sure that some of these will be great ideas for your family!

After instituting the chores in my home this past week I can tell you 2 major things.

#1 You must be consistent with your kids. They have to know that this is their routine/job and they have to be responsible for it.

#2 In the beginning it will be more your job then theirs. You must teach them how to be efficient in their chore. My 5 year old has learned to sweep. It took a couple times, but he now knows how to do it. It's not only a learning lesson for them, but a teaching moment for you.

I am so lucky to have found Denise. She was such a pleasure to work with and my purchase with her was very budget friendly. Most of her instant downloads are just $5 and the custom charts were in the $25 range for all 5 of them. If you know how much graphic designers usually charge, then you know this was a really great deal!

When I mentioned to Denise that I would be creating a blog post about my new chore system she graciously offered to give away $30 to her shop! You can use the money to make your own custom chore chart like mine, or you can use it on one of her instant downloads. All you have to do is enter below! I will be picking a winner at the end of the week :)

Till next time!
The Wolin Family is getting organized.
Don't laugh.
This is not a joke, I promise.
Although I am the most disorganized person in the world
It's not fair to make my children suffer anymore.
I'm an artist.
Nuff' said.
OY.

I decided that the first thing I'm going to do tackle
On my master makeover list is..........
School lunches.

I hate them.
I hate preparing them.
I hate making them.
I hate sending them.
I never have time to make them!
I wish wish wish my school provided my kids with lunches!
But they don't.

I guess there is a plus side though.
I get to have control over what my kids eat.
I am pretty particular about purchasing healthy snacks and foods.
Which is not always so simple since my family eats only kosher.

I try very hard to find foods that have
No GMO's
No corn syrup
And I try to buy the dirty dozen organically.

My favorite place to shop is Trader Joes.
They have a huge selection of kosher healthy food and snacks.
I tend to go shopping there every Monday and stock up on everything I will need to make my kids lunches for the week. Mind you I have 5 kids ranging from playgroup to Middle School. So I need a lot of snack and bread!

This is what the new me does :)

As soon as I come home from the market and my groceries are put away I start to separate all the snack in to individual ziplock bags. I cut up all the fruit and veggies before hand and separate them into ziplocks also. I have 4 bins (1) Nosh (2) Snack (3) Fruit (1) Veggies. Every day my kids can take out 1 bag from each of the containers to take with them to school. I used to do this all 5 seconds before carpool was coming. Now it's just so simple and easy. Everything is ready for them!

Here's what's in each of the bins, but I alternate from week to week
(1) Nosh - Chips, cookies, bars
(2) Snack - Pretzels, crackers, popcorn
(3) Fruit - Apple slices, melon, orange, banana ect.....
(4) Vegetables - carrots, celery, peppers

I store my snack bins in my drawer and the fruit and veggies in my fridge. Every morning I take it out and put it on my counter for the kids to choose what they want to take that day. I refill the bins as needed.

Yesterday,
I was perusing my Facebook timeline when I noticed that a friend of mine had
shared a status about Hobby Lobby written by Larry Tepper.

You can read the full status here,
but in a nutshell Larry explains that when his friends visited the Marlboro
Hobby Lobby store in New Jersey they were told that they would not be stocking
any Chanukah (Hanukkah) items because the store did not cater to "You
People." and when Larry called the Marlboro store himself he was told
verbatim "Mr. Green is the owner of the company, he's a Christian, and
those are his values."

UPDATE: After some careful research it seems that the original post came from a political blog written by Ken Berwitz entitled "Hopelessly Partisan."

Since then it's started to create
a buzz. All over the Hobby Lobby facebook page people are wondering what's
the deal? Is Hobby Lobby anti-Semitic? And it's not just Facebook it's on Etsy too. Crafters all over are taking
a stand for and against Hobby Lobby's decision to carry Hanukkah items.

Being the ever questioning Jew, I
decided to call the corporate offices of Hobby Lobby this morning myself. I
wanted to know what their official stance or take was. I first spoke to a very
nice man who then transferred me to the Customer Service center - I think I
might have taken him a little by surprise.

The next man I spoke to explained
in his very thick Southern drawl that Hobby Lobby used to carry Hanukkah items,
but they were selling poorly on a National level and so they pulled the items
from their shelves and they are no longer carrying any Hanukkah items. I then
asked him, if that's the truth, then why did the Marlboro store say that it was
the Christian values of Mr. Green that Hobby Lobby doesn't cater to the Jewish
crowd. He told me that they are “looking into it.”

Some people argue that it's their
right to not carry Jewish items. Why should they? It's their store.... let them
do what they want. If this was a mom and pop shop I would agree with them.
There are many local craft and gift stores that only sell Christmas related
items and there are Judaica stores that only sell Jewish related items. However
Hobby Lobby is a craft store that sells nationwide. <span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Cambria","serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">If they want to sell all over the nation then they must include

<span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">I don’t
think that the company should go out of business, selling items that no one
wants to buy. If you look at the facts or if you read Larry's original facebook
post you would know that 1/3 of the population near the Marlboro store is
Jewish. If Hobby Lobby was unsuccessful in the past selling Judaica items, it
might behoove them now to start carrying Hanukkah items in areas near Jewish
communities.

It sounds kind of strange to say that, but it's true.

We are living a completely different life then we did last year.

My hubs has a new job.
My immediate families dynamic has changed since my step fathers passing.
My children are growing bigger and more independent every day.
I launched jCreate this past May and I am no longer teaching, but focusing on Not 2 Shabbey full time.

I remember crying and lying in the bed at the hotel room.
I knew, deep down that this was all a good thing and that everything would be fine in the end.
But I was mourning the loss of what had happened.
Of losing my old life in a blink of a moment.
I wasn't given any warning.
I came home to find my home destroyed
And a new life waiting for me.

We spent the holidays in a house we moved into less then 2 months ago.
Base boards still need to be finished.
Tiling still need to be put down and grouted.
Painting and sheet rocking are still not complete.
But we are home and that's all that matters for now.

My house is beautiful and my husband and I stand in the kitchen on most nights thanking God for this blessing in disguise wondering outloud...."Is this really our home?" We are just so thankful to be home at last.

This Sukkot, all I wanted was to be home and to feel at home.
Because there was no time to plan
Between shipping orders and painting them
Between kids home and having no school
We decorated our Sukkah in all it's "kitschy" glory.
With Christmas lights and colored foil decorations.

The only thing that I wanted this Sukkot was a green top.
I grew up in LA where we always had palm and for the past 8 years since moving to the East Coast I had been looking for green Schach. I saw on Facebook someone advertising that they were selling evergreen schach and I quickly called and reserved my bundles. The night before I was set to go to Brooklyn to get them, I mentioned to my husband before heading to bed that I was going to get them the next morning and I hoped that I had room in the car. He then pointedly said back to me, "Are you trying to relive your father's glory days picking up the schach in his big red truck?"

The famous tale that is told over and over again in my family goes like this.......
My father had a big red truck.
He used to go around before Sukkot getting palm leaves
And delivering them throughout the neighborhood.
One year there weren't any palm leaves to be found.
I'm not sure why, but he went searching and searching all over the city.
He ended up finding a bunch
But only after he had to jump a fence to retrieve the leaves headed for the dump.

I know this doesn't seem like a big deal.
But the story made a lasting impression on my sisters and I.
Bamboo mats were not so prevalent in those days.
I only saw them once I moved to the East Coast.
There would be no sukkah without those palm leaves.
My father had a truck
People needed the leaves
And so he went searching.
Little acts of Chesed - That's what's important in life.
That's what he taught me.

I just wanted to feel safe this Sukkot.
Perhaps I was seeking old memories.
But when I saw that green schach in my Sukkah this year
I was truly very happy.
Though my husband wasn't too happy with me.......
He kept telling me the Sukkah would cave in.
That the ceiling was too heavy.
He had to buy wooden supports....
OY OY OY.
The lists go on and on.
But you know what?
He did it for me.
Because he knew it would make me happy.
And I love him for that.

I ended the last days of Sukkot with my immediate family.
My brother from Israel came in.
My brother - in - law was here too.
My brother and his newly minted Kallah came as well.
And to top it off my mom spent 3 glorious days with my children.
Not only was it special for my family,
But it was wonderful having them around.

I guess you can say that there are a lot of lessons that can be learned from my experience this past year ........
- Appreciate what you have because you never know when it will be gone.
- The most important things in life are the items that can't be bought -
LIKE FAMILY

But the one lesson that I learned long ago - the one that I live by everyday is....
You don't get 2 lives,
You don't get 3 lives.
You only get one life to live.
So you better make it good.
Don't live in sadness.
Don't look back.
Stop crying and do something with your life.
Because all of your experiences.
Everything that happens to you is for a reason
And makes you stronger.

Till next time,
Fresh flowers are a staple in most Jewish homes on Shabbos and Yom Tov.

My dining room is the first thing you walk into when you come into my home. It can be a little awkward, so I have tried to create a very homey ambiance. I always try to have a nice fresh vase of flowers sitting on my dining room table. I also have fresh flowers in my bedroom and powder bathroom off the kitchen.

Flowers make me happy.

Just looking at them lifts my day!
They are so so pretty.

Every week I buy whatever is available to me and the least expensive at the store.

I am very particular about my flowers.

- How I like to arrange them

- How I want them to be arranged by someone else

- The colors that are used

- The size and dimension of the bouquet

-The fullness of the flowers

All of these things come to play when I am putting together my flowers for my table.

Please note:

I am not a florist, nor do I claim to be.

I'm just a creative junky that has learned these tricks and tip on my own.

I could be offering you the totally wrong advice, but it works for me :)

So read on at your discretion.....

Here are some simple tips to make arraigning your own flowers a little easier...

#1 - Choose a vase that works for you.

I personally like low vases. I do not like tall ones. The ONLY time I will ever use a tall one is if there are smaller vases flanking on either side of the larger one.

Mason jars make fantastic vases. Use 3 of them in a row, or get larger fatter ones and just use 2.

#2 - Cover the outside or inside of your vase so you can't see the stems.

- The easiest way to get an opaque vase is to paint them. I painted all of my mason jars and distressed them. That simple tutorial can be found here.

- You can also wrap burlap around your vase and tie it with some raffia.

- One of my favorite things to do is to fill up a vase with pebbles or coffee beans. Watch the video below - It's soo easy!

#3 - Choose a variety of flowers in the same color family.
That means they are in the same shades and hues. You can add a pop of a complementary color to add dimension.

#4 - Use a variety of heights to add shape to your tablescape.
If you are planning on having a few different vases on your table then I recommend them being a variety of sizes and heights. It will add a beautiful dimension to your overall tablescape.

#5- Make your arrangement look full and lush

You want your vase to look full NOT overcrowded. The trick is to buy a couple flowers that will give you the right coverage. I LOVE hydrangeas. They are my favorite. I will usually buy 3 stems along with another bunch of flowers like the Peruvian Lilies pictured above.

#6 - Treat Your Flowers Well

I cut my stems every other day and change the water adding some of the flower food powder that they give you. I find that my flowers last a full week till I go to the grocery store again to buy new ones.

#7 - Find Flowers on a Budget

The best place to find flowers on a serious budget is Trader Joes. They bring in fresh flowers daily and they are always the gorgeous and lush. I can get 3 stems of hydrangeas for $5.99 and bunches of other flowers from $3.99 to $4.99. Bunches of roses are normally $7.99

My other favorite place to go is Fairway. Although they are a bit more expensive, not much more, they always have a good selection and their flowers always last longest.

If you don't live near any of these stores, I would recommend you find a place locally that sells fresh flowers, life a florist or farmers market. Make really good relationships with the owners. The more you come by their store the more they will get to know you and your needs. If I don't have time to make my own flowers I always head out to Papaya Events, my local flower shop in Passaic. Devorah can always make me the most beautiful arrangements on my budget. Not only does she work locally, but she does event planning and floral designing throughout the tri-state area. I highly recommend them for your Simcha needs.

I hope these tips not only come in handy this week with the holiday coming, but adding color and beauty to your weekly Shabbos tables!

Till next time!

Last week someone said something to me that I still can't get over.

Here's how the conversation went:

Her: How's the house coming along?
Me: Hoping it's ready in time for the move-out in 2 weeks! Totally overwhelming!
Her: Well. I'm just SOOOOOOO happy for you! (overexcited beyond words happy)
Me: Really??? Why????
Her: Cause your house was so so so so so so so so............................... (feels bad telling you)
Me: Gross??
Her: Well yah, I just didn't want to tell you, but now that you've said it - well your house was really gross and totally needed to be redone.
Me: OH. Thanks.

I've decided that people just don't think before they speak.
She wasn't trying to be mean.
I know that.
I think she thought that because she was my friend it was OK.
But listen.
No one can ever insult your home, kids, or hubs except you.
Ain't that the truth.

Look, truth be told
My house was gross.
Totally needed to get redone.
And I would still be living in that mess had Hashem (G-D) not decided that my life needed a makeover.

But there was a cost.
There's always a cost.
A lot of suffering went around this year
Not going to bore you all with the details
But just know that my family and company took a lot of hits.

I'm telling you this story because I feel bad.
I know that many people can't afford to redo their homes.
I know many people wish they could have brand new kitchens.
Redone bathrooms and freshly painted bedrooms.
I get it, because that was me for the past 12 years.

I know what it's like living on a budget.
Trying to live within a means that is non-existent.

I have been feeling very torn.
Wanting to show you all the construction pictures
And not wanting to show you at all.
I would never want someone to think that I am bragging.
No one wants to see pictures of your brand new kitchen when they're living in a tiny apartment.

But here's the deal.
This is what I do.
I'm a.......
Colorist
Designer
Artist

I want to take you on my journey.

I want to show you all
The decisions I made - And why I made them.
Budget friendly decorating ideas
Color palette painting concepts
And so much more.

With the utmost sensitivity.

This all happened to me for a reason
So I am going to embrace it.
And hope that if you love what I've done
Perhaps you'll choose me to help you when the times is right.

Till next time!
I know I've been pretty quite lately.
Seems like my life is one big tornado cloud.
Family, work, camp, kids all pulling me in a hundred different directions.

Yah, I'm tired.
Moving in 2 weeks and tons to get through.
So excited about going home.
Not so excited about moving yet again.

I have a lot to tell you guys.
I will try to write them all down here.
But please bear with me
As I have a lot to share.

First things first.
I'M GOING HOME!
Totally excited
But it's not done yet.
Being kicked out in 2 weeks and I'm hoping that I am going home to a functional house.
If not we'll rough it for a while.
Been through worse.... right??

My biggest problem is that all of our stuff from storage is coming back the same day we come home.
Now when you move there's a certain amount of sense when you pack.
In our case, our home debacle happened on the last day of Yom Tov.
What does YOUR house look like at the end of Yom Tov??
Not so pretty right?
Well the packers came in and threw everything together.
The dirty socks with the books.
God only knows what I will find when I start opening the gazillion boxes that will be coming back.
I think that this is the most stressful part.

Not the fact that I have to pack up over here in the rental house.
We don't have much stuff, just all my 50+ boxes from the studio.
The kitchen stuff
All our clothes
Toys
and
Books

Yah, I tried to sell off pieces, just didn't make a huge dent.
There's just NO TIME.
Would love to have a virtual Garage Sale on Sunday -think I should?

I still have to repaint all the walls in the house - my kid love to draw on the wall.
His favorite? Black Sharpies.
Repaint the floor in the basement. (Yah, I made a little mess :)

Oh.... and did I tell you???
I'm working full time at a camp this summer! 9-4 everyday
Had I known that I was moving in the middle of July I would have thought twice
As well as if I had known that I had to wear a wig all day too.
Paint and sheitels just don't mix.
But in all seriousness I love what I do and painting with little hands is just awesome.

Our next issue for jCreate Magazine comes out in the beginning of August.
Collecting content and sending them to my graphics girl.
I called her today and she was happy to hear that I wasn't dead.
Yah, I told her I've been a little quite these days.....

Shipping out the last of my orders and then I'm calling it quits guys.
I need a little R&R
Tired beyond words doesn't even describe how I feel these days.
So I'm closing up shop for the month of July.
Got to move home and reset-up my studio.

Because.... guess what people??
The holidays come super early this year.
Got to be ready to ship out all those orders come August 1st.

But DO NOT fear!
I will be around sharing my journey moving back home.
So if you don't hear from me for a couple of days please don't be scared.
I'm not dead. Just huddled under a million boxes.
For those of you who have no clue what CC is, it's literally crack for accessory lovers like me. From necklaces to belts, shoes to rings they've got it all. Colors are divided by sections and for many people looking for a specific piece to match their outfit this setup is perfect. But for creative people like me this type of store can be quite overwhelming. The first time I stepped into CC, I literally walked right out. I didn't even buy anything - I was on color overload.

Why am I bringing up my favorite accessories secret store now? Well that same feeling I felt back then is the same one I've been feeling recently.

Most of you know that last October, my family and I were thrown a curve ball when our house sprung a leak, and the entire place was gutted. This episode has now been dubbed the Great House Debacle. We've been living in a rental property and it's finally time to rebuild. The choices are immense and the budget is so tiny. I don't even want to tell you what happened the first time I walked into the tile store.

Although this whole process should be fun for me, I am finding it extremely challenging. Organization and working within a budget..... well those things are not really my strong suit. And don't get me started on measurements - I never understood that math.

I think that the hardest part for me are all the choices! I feel like I have hundreds of people yelling at me all day long, but it's just my mind trying to file away all my ideas. When I am actively engaged in a creative process, I get super hyper focused that all I do is sleep, eat, and think about the design or layout of a project. Right now, my whole house needs to be redone and I am slowly starting to freak out.

Thank goodness I have Sara Schmutter -
She has become my partner in "grime."
(If you saw my house you'd get the joke)
Not only did she design the most creative kitchen and bathroom spaces for me, but she has been there every step of the way shopping with me for tiles, hanging out at Ikea and Lowes, and she even carries around with her a tape measure to handle all those nasty measurements.

I can't wait to start sharing with you all before and after pictures. Finding good deals and rebuilding on a budget is the key to my successful home remodel.

If you are looking to remodel your home and would like to get in contact with Sara. Please message me at shabbey2@gmail.com I would be more then happy to pass along her info.
Passover Envy - Keeping Up With The Goldberg's

Over Passover I had an idea swimming around in my head for a blog post.
And then my friend posted this on a popular facebook group.
It was like she had been reading my thoughts exactly.
Of course it caused an uproar.......

"I spent 40 minutes talking a friend of the ledge. She's having major performance anxiety over Pesach. Her husband is working again (thank G-d) and she's home with three kids under the age of five. Facebook has gotten to her; the fancy tablescapes, intricate Kosher for Passover recipes, pressure to push herself and their budget in order to feel like it's enough.

I love seeing what others do for Shabbos and Holidays. For all of you who are easily overwhelmed please know that many of us have weeks where we just piece together meals. It's also quite easy to make things glamorious when you have an unlimited budget. Chill."

It think it's time that we all start an honest conversation about what is real.

So here's my confession.....

I often post inspirational table settings and craft ideas for children and adults.
It may seem that I have it all together and my life is super grand
BUT
I literally almost did not make it to this Passover.
If it had not been for my mother swooping in at the very last second,
we would never have been ready in time.

"What do you mean?"
"How could this be?"
" Don't you have it all together Abbey??"
I hear your thoughts in my head......

I always say that in my family we all stick to what we are good at. I don't know how to clean, I'm not really good at it, so I tend to stay out of my husbands way when it comes to Passover cleaning. Well this year was no exception, but I really really couldn't have helped him even if I wanted to.

Baruch Hashem (Thank God) I have a job, which lends itself to be seasonal, and Passover's my busiest time of the year. I worked myself to the bone, I think I averaged 3 hours of sleep 2 weeks in a row, taking a break for Shabbos. The week that all the items were to ship, my assistant got sick and I was left alone to do everything on my own. Painting, cleaning, and shipping. When Thursday came and all the pieces were out of my house I gave an audible sigh of relief and slept for the first time in weeks and when I woke up I realized that I had to make Passover in my rental home.

Now if you have been following my home debacle saga, you will know that everything I have is in storage. How could I possibly afford to buy new things, how could I possibly make Passover?? You see what I make painting and working is not extra side money, but my actual parnassah (income). There is never any money left over for fancy vacations or pretty things. I have 5 children and Yeshiva tuition's to pay, if anyone has extra money laying around it's not me.

So the way I saw it I had two problems that I needed to figure out.
(1) Cleaning - We needed to get the house clean for Passover in T minus 2 days
(2) Prepare - I needed all the stuff to cook with including pots, pans, and FOOD!
Remember people this was already the Friday BEFORE Passover.
I already hear my husband yelling at me for telling you all this. OYSH!

So here's what I did to solve problem #1
I called my mother.
Fine. You can all laugh at me. Totally fine, I'm ok with that!!
She came for shabbos and spent Saturday night and Sunday helping my husband getting the house cleaned and ready.

Problem #2 was slightly trickier and will make you all extremely nervous, but I will tell you anyway.
Because my mother is single now and will be spending Passover with all her grandchildren, she graciously offered her Passover dishes, pots, and pans to me. The problem was that our schedule was so tight, that it would be impossible to pick up the stuff until after we burned the Chometz on Monday. My mother's home is in Long Island and I live in Passaic, NJ - A slight situation here. How was I going to cook??

So what did we do?
Well by some miracle we had one box of Passover meat pots and pans in my attic in the old home and while my husband and mother went to retrieve the rest of her Passover items in Long Island I was able to cook what I could with those pots. A friend lent me a knife and a peeler, and I used a plastic plate as a cutting board.

By the time my mother and husband were back it was 4 o'clock about two and a half hours till candle lighting. Most of the food was up and we began to sort through the boxes, washing dishes and getting the table set for the seder. Right before candle lighting I snapped this picture of my table. Notice how there is no silverware, Haggadah's, or napkins anywhere to be seen.

So why am I telling you this story?
Am I proud of the fact that I wasn't ready in time?
No. I'm actually embarrassed.

Am I happy that my mother had to come rescue me?
Well yes, and grateful too!

So what's the point???

GUESS WHAT PEOPLE!
I don't have it all together and I'm sure there are many other people out there who don't either!

It's ok to not have a perfect table setting.
It's ok to not have a fancy home.
It's ok to cook on the holiday and not have it prepared in advance.
It's ok to be late.
It's ok to run out to the store 3 hours before the holiday for new pants for your son because you realized all the ones he has are ruined with holes and stains.

I think that in life and especially via social media outlets we've got to be careful
Of what we say and what we post.
It's important to be sensitive to others.

We are not meant to see everyone's lives like an open book.
Vacations, new homes, new cars, children, spouses, and tablesettings.
All of a sudden these things are all brought into your face for your viewing pleasure
And yet you never asked to see them.
Who wants to feel that they aren't good enough??

"The grass isn't greener on the other side."
You may think that the other person has it all together, but we all have our own Pekel's (lot)

What I am trying to do here is start a conversation about how you all feel.

Was my friend wrong in writing this post?
What do you think?
Please leave a comment below and let me know!
So when I was a kid I sat next to this really skinny pretty girl with long brown hair in school. I can remember going to her Bat Mitzvah in Pico, an area of LA that at the time NO ONE lived. I used to sit in class watching her draw pictures. She was an amazing artist.
